Sony is currently testing the ability to play VR games on a PC with Playstation VR 2.

FACTS

Sony writes in a blog post on the first anniversary of Playstation VR 2:

“Also, we’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”

CONTEXT & OPINION

Playstation VR 2 has seemingly struggled to get off the ground since it launched a year ago. Although the platform now has more than a hundred VR games, it lacks bigger Playstation exclusives that could attract masses of new players. And the accessory is still more expensive than a PS5.

Today’s announcement is good news for PC VR enthusiasts, who could get access to great hardware for comparatively little money. It will likely be less well received by PS5 gamers who were hoping for a greater commitment from Sony in terms of games. While there are many more VR games available on PC, very few PS5 users will want to upgrade to a PC or own such hardware.

There are currently no details on how the PC VR support will work and what it might include. But it seems unlikely that Sony will make a significant profit from this, at least if the PSVR 2 becomes a regular SteamVR headset. Sony makes most of its money from selling games on the PlayStation Store, not from selling hardware.

A team of hackers has been working on PC VR support for some time, but a special adapter is required for the connection, and that is by no means the only hurdle. Sony will probably have to offer an adapter as well.
